MR. SAM PEPPER
CHAIR OF THE LOCAL WORKFORCE INVESTMENT BOARD OF YUMA COUNTY
Although
the authorizing legislation is different today, the workforce challenges we face
in Yuma County have not become less daunting. High unemployment rates, low
educational attainment rates, and low per capita income levels continue to be
significant issues. What has changed, however, is the spirit of cooperation and
collaboration among agencies that historically have not worked together. The
Yuma County Workforce Investment Board is proud to be part of this renewed
effort to build community through partnering and focusing resources on major
problem areas that occur in the labor market in order to assist individuals to
obtain and retain employment. In many cases, this means preparing individuals
for success by first taking care of basic needs such as childcare,
transportation, health care, and literacy by working with other community
agencies.
We realize that the problems faced in Yuma County are complex and require a
systems approach if we hope to have some measure of success. That is why
the Workforce Investment Board continues to take a leadership role in fostering
these vital community coalitions. Any success that we have enjoyed would
not be possible if it were not for the extraordinary commitment and dedication
of civic-minded individuals and organizations. Together with these civic
stewards, the Workforce Investment Board will continue our efforts to build
community in Yuma County.
